This exercise represents a partial but more challenging task in the development of spatial orientation with a focus on right-left orientation. 

The exercise offers:

  • A simpler version  right/left/up/down combinations by placing a picture in a 2x2 grid.
  • A more advanced version  right/left/up/down/centre combinations by placing the picture in a 3x3 grid.


Why is this exercise important?
Visual discrimination is an important skill and develops gradually from a child's early years. The child should be able to distinguish and be aware of details first, then horizontal and then vertical position. Passive and then active awareness of spatial orientation, and right-left orientation. Visual discrimination plays a pivotal role in the development of the child's perception.

For whom is the exercise suitable?
Generally belongs to preschool or early school play. In addition to concepts expressing spatial relationships, it also develops language skills.

Methodological recommendations
Either read aloud the instructions, play them from the app or let the child read them by themselves.

We check that the child understands the concepts of up/down/right/left and can use them actively. It is advisable to turn on the 2x2 grid in the settings first and later on the 3x3 grid or turn on a random display.

Tips for similar activities outside the app
We have many opportunities to practice in our daily lives. Examples include describing a situation on the street, describing a picture or guessing who I am thinking of in a picture using the terms right/left/top/centre. 

If the child is still having trouble realizing the right orientation, start by first realizing before/behind (front/back axis), above/below (horizontal axis), only later add right/left (vertical axis) and build on experience (I draw right  determine the direction to the right first). Later, draw a chalk path using arrows, draw the picture as instructed and so on.
