Identifying left and right (facing others)

Tips on how to use this exercise at home and at school.

Identifying left and right (facing others)

Early math concepts

In this exercise, the child recognizes the right and left of the other person, which is one of the more challenging tasks. This skill is a group of knowledge, skills and experiences using all the senses as well as movement in space during games, sports and other activities.

Why is this exercise important?
Visual distinction, which is the focus of this exercise, plays a vital role in the development of a child's perception.

The child should first distinguish and be aware of details, foreground, horizontal and then vertical. Passively and then actively become aware of spatial and orthogonal orientation. The task "recognize right and left on the other person" represents the highest level in the preschool child's perception of spatial relationships.

Who is the exercise suitable for?
Generally belongs in preschool or early school play. In addition to concepts expressing spatial relationships, it also develops language skills.

Methodological recommendations
Either read aloud the instructions, play them from the app or let the child read them by themselves.

The child answers the question about what the monkey is holding in its right or left hand. Questions are randomly generated for each variant. In the answer menu, the child always has the choice of both objects that the monkey is holding. The aim is not to make the child work mechanically but to think about the answer first and then answer. You can extend the task with a common illustration, using a real situation, where you face the child and show how it looks from his/her point of view when you hold the object in your right or left hand.

Tips for similar activities outside the app
Games like "touch your left shoulder with your right hand" are great. Touch my left shoulder with your right hand. If you are facing the child, the task is harder, if you are standing as oriented as the child, the answer is easier for the child.
